It was another painful day there. In that dreadful place where we were kept like animals in a butcher shop, waiting for our time to come. There was no doubt, this was the place where I would meet my untimely demise. We all would. Men, women, children; all dead. The government refused to accept it, but it was a fact. The crisp white rooms and smiling guards did little to mask the harsh reality. We were all just waiting for death to come to us. And it would. It wasn't so much a question of how; more so, when. Lowering the bucket,
cause there was a queue,
and water was water these days.
The last thing that man expected to
see was coins.
Gold coins.
A bucket full of gold coins.
She tossed every penny she ever

Doing the things she did for them.
Wishing the same wish

and the crowd saw the coins.
There was a rush to get to the well.
She'd kiss each coin,
and close her eyes
and drop it in.
The mound below would grow
steadily bigger.
So many buckets,
choking the mouth of the well.
They found her body
when the last coin was got.
Down where she had nothing to
throw in but herself.
